Friday, July 16, 2010, 50 on Friday Program:
When you remember your own university days, you probably remember a handful of standout professors, those whose manner and intellect still affect you.
For many Notre Dame students during the last half of the 20th century and into this
one, Professor Edward A. Goerner has been such a star. In those times, registering for
the classes he taught on the political systems of Europe or political theory was always a competition.
On July 16th, we will have the privilege of discussing two topics that can lead to
a range of questions. The first is a proposal made by some Tea Party groups who
would like the Constitution amended so that U.S. Senators are elected by the
state legislatures. The second is another proposed Constitutional amendment,
one meant to overturn the Supreme Court decisions affecting donations of money
to political campaigns as a right of free speech. Professor Goerner will explain
how major European democratic republics deal with political campaign financing.
After graduating from Notre Dame with a BA in Economics in 1952, Professor Goerner
earned MA and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science at the University of Chicago.
Now semi-retired and semi-aging, with a regimen that includes plenty of kayaking,
Professor Goerner is a South Bend, IN, resident.
